Atticus wants to do something good ( win the case) even though he knows the white people won't agree with him. Whats right is that he wanted to defend Tom Robinson, because it is the right thing to do. Whats wrong is that the white people won't agree with him just because he's black. On page 100, it says that Atticus felt like if he didn't defend Tom Robinson, then he couldn't hold his head up in the town. He couldn't represent this country in the legislature.
Atticus knows that if he defends Tom Robinson, it would go against his winning record and would make him an outcast in town. I believe that you are right, that Atticus is more motivated toward self respect and holding his head up high than by taking the easy way out and not defending Tom Robinson.
